Abuja, Nigeria – The Speaker of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Parliament, Hadja Mémounatou Ibrahima, has urged for greater regional solidarity as she opened the first ordinary session of the Community Parliament for 2025 in Abuja today.
Addressing the gathering, Ms. Ibrahima expressed gratitude to the Nigerian authorities, particularly President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for their consistent support to the Parliament. She also welcomed representatives from other ECOWAS institutions, acknowledging their collaborative spirit in advancing regional integration.
Addressing Regional Challenges
The Speaker highlighted the Parliament’s recent engagements, including joint committee meetings that addressed pressing issues such as the implications of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger’s decision to withdraw from ECOWAS. Challenges in air transport within the region were also a key discussion point. Ms. Ibrahima noted the Parliament’s active participation in international forums aimed at promoting peace and solidarity across West Africa.
Celebrating Milestones and Forging a New Path
This year marks a significant milestone for ECOWAS, which celebrates its 50th anniversary, while the Parliament itself commemorates its 25th year. Ms. Ibrahima paid tribute to the founding fathers of ECOWAS, commending their vision for a united West Africa and emphasising the Parliament’s critical role as a platform for dialogue and fostering regional integration.
The Speaker stressed the urgent need to “rethink the integration model,” calling for enhanced citizen engagement and instilling hope despite the current challenges facing the bloc.
Before officially launching the celebrations for the ECOWAS Parliament’s 25th anniversary, Ms. Ibrahima appealed for unity and perseverance. She honoured the legacy of the founding fathers, reaffirming the commitment to building an inclusive and cohesive West Africa where peace and harmony prevail.
