Businesswoman Aisha Achimugu has been brought before the Federal High Court in Abuja today, Wednesday, by Nigeria’s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). This follows a court order for her appearance.
Ms. Achimugu, escorted by two female EFCC officers, arrived at the court premises around 11:35 am local time.
The EFCC had declared her wanted in March over allegations of criminal conspiracy and money laundering. On Monday, Justice I.E. Ekwo of the Federal High Court in Abuja ordered Ms. Achimugu to appear before the anti-graft agency on Tuesday and subsequently before the court today.
Reports indicate that Ms. Achimugu was apprehended by EFCC operatives upon her arrival in Nigeria at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja around 5 am on Tuesday and has been in their custody since.
Her lawyer, Chikaosolu Ojukwu, confirmed her arrest upon her return from London and criticised the EFCC, stating that the arrest was in contravention of a court order.
Ms. Achimugu’s appearance in court marks the latest development in the ongoing legal proceedings related to the allegations against her.
