Nigeria Promises Increased Support for UN Humanitarian Operations

Nigeria’s Defence Minister, Mohammed Badaru, has pledged to enhance the nation’s support for the United Nations Resident Coordinator and humanitarian services operating across the country.

A press release signed by Pat Ituke, Director of Information and Public Relations at the Ministry of Defence says the Minister made the commitment during a meeting with the UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator, Mohamed Malick Fall, in Abuja.

Mr. Badaru emphasised the importance of stronger coordination, collaboration, and sustainable development, describing the meeting as “long overdue.” He highlighted the necessity of revitalising long-standing partnerships and building on past successes in crucial areas such as health, water and sanitation, education, and livelihood support.

Reflecting on previous collaborations, Minister Badaru acknowledged the positive impact of healthy competition and benchmarking between Nigerian states in driving development. He recalled his time as a state governor, during which several states achieved high rankings in national development indices, particularly in water access, health services, and livelihood initiatives.

Responding to the Minister’s assurances, the UN Resident Coordinator, Mohamed Malick Fall, expressed his appreciation for Mr. Badaru’s leadership and reaffirmed the UN’s readiness to collaborate with both federal and state authorities to improve humanitarian and development responses across Nigeria.

Key areas discussed during the meeting included establishing pilot projects for new service delivery models, fostering greater collaboration among technical teams, and engaging with national security institutions to ensure the effective implementation of humanitarian initiatives.
