Nigerian Police Investigate Death of Delta State Governor’s Special Adviser

Police in Delta State, southern Nigeria, have launched an investigation into the death of Chief Love Shimite, a Special Adviser to the State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori.

Chief Shimite, who held the portfolio of Special Adviser on Trade and Export, passed away in the early hours of Easter Monday. Initial reports had suggested her death followed a brief illness.

The Delta State Police Command confirmed the death and the ongoing investigation through its Public Relations Officer, Bright Edafe. He stated that Chief Shimite was “confirmed dead at the hospital where she was taken.”

A central aspect of the police inquiry involves Chief Shimite’s husband. According to Mr. Edafe, the husband was the one who reported his wife’s death and claimed to be receiving threats from her family, who feared he might be attacked. As a result, police took him into protective custody “for his own safety.”

Mr. Edafe emphasised that the husband is currently not under arrest but is being protected by the authorities.

However, the situation took a more complex turn when “the deceased’s family later lodged a formal complaint with the police,” Mr. Edafe revealed. In their complaint, the family expressed suspicions that the husband may have been involved in Chief Shimite’s death.

In response to these concerns, the police have indicated they are conducting a thorough investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding her death.

“We are currently investigating,” Mr. Edafe stated. “In situations like this, only an autopsy can determine whether the death was natural or due to other causes.”

The police have said they will provide further updates as their investigation progresses. The case has drawn attention in Delta State, given Chief Shimite’s prominent role within the state government.
