Nigeria Presidency Denies Election Chief’s Sacking Amid Social Media Claims

The Nigerian presidency has dismissed widespread reports circulating on social media that President Bola Tinubu has removed the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu, from office.

Reports claiming Professor Yakubu had been replaced by a Professor Bashiru Olamilekan began to circulate widely online early on Monday, triggering significant discussion.

In response, O’tega Ogra, the Senior Special Adviser to the President on Digital and New Media, issued a statement on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), categorically denying the reports.

“Disregard any fake news making the rounds about the replacement of the INEC Chairman,” Mr. Ogra stated.

He clarified that any official announcement regarding such a decision would be issued by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation or through other official government communication channels.

The reports, which were described as a “sweeping change” in INEC’s leadership, have since been labelled as misinformation, with no confirmation from the presidency or any federal government agency.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is responsible for overseeing elections in Nigeria.
