Nigerian President Condemns Plateau State Attacks, Promises Retribution

President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria has vowed that those responsible for a series of deadly attacks in Plateau State, located in North Central Nigeria, will be apprehended and face severe legal consequences.

The President expressed his condolences to the families of victims in the Ruwi, Hurti, and Tadai communities of Bokkos Local Government Area, as well as those in Manguna and Dafo villages, where armed gunmen carried out brutal attacks, resulting in numerous deaths and widespread property destruction.

Plateau State, known as the “Home of Peace and Tourism,” shares borders with several states and is situated in the country’s North Central region. Its capital, Jos, is approximately 240-250 kilometres (around 150-155 miles) northeast of Nigeria’s capital city, Abuja, by road. The journey typically takes around 3.5 to 4 hours by car.

President Tinubu extended his sympathies to the Plateau State government and Governor Caleb Mutfwang, urging affected communities to cooperate with authorities and security agencies by providing information to aid in the capture of the perpetrators and to secure their areas.

He assured Governor Mutfwang of his administration’s full support in efforts to end the cycle of violence in the region.

The President has also directed the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to collaborate with state authorities to provide immediate assistance to victims and deliver relief to affected communities and those injured in the attacks. NEMA will work with the state government to facilitate the rebuilding and recovery of the affected areas.

In a statement released on Friday, President Tinubu said, “The report of another violent attack in communities in Plateau State by mindless gunmen saddens me. The latest attacks on defenceless citizens are unacceptable. I have directed security agencies to hunt down the attackers, and they will face severe punishment when apprehended. These intermittent attacks should have no place in our country at a time when we are working so hard to restore peace and order in all parts of our country. This unfortunate incident will never dampen and slow us down in our duty to protect every Nigerian citizen. Instead, we will work harder to exterminate forces of evil wherever they are lurking in our country.”

He added, “Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims’ families and all those affected by this senseless violence. No community should have to endure such tragedy. We all must unite to foster peace and stability. I urge all citizens—regardless of ethnic, religious, or political affiliations—to uphold the shared humanity that binds us all, embrace peace and reject retaliation.”
