Nigeria and the United States have held a high-level virtual meeting to discuss strengthening cooperation on a range of mutual interests. The inaugural discussion took place between Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar and the United States Deputy Secretary of State, Christopher Landau.
During the online talks, both officials underscored key areas for collaboration between the two nations. These included energy, technology, trade, human capital development, security, religious freedom, and immigration.
Minister Tuggar conveyed Nigeria’s eagerness to work with the new administration in Washington, led by President Trump, to advance shared objectives and deepen the existing bilateral relationship.
Highlighting Nigeria’s focus on managing migration effectively, Minister Tuggar referenced initiatives such as the Technical Aide Corps (TAC). This program deploys Nigerian professionals to other countries to support their development efforts, which he argued provides a more structured approach to migration that benefits both Nigeria and its international partners.
On the US side, Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to a robust and lasting partnership with Nigeria. He emphasized the importance of bolstering commercial links, increasing security collaboration, and intensifying diplomatic engagement between the two countries.
This virtual meeting represents the first significant interaction at a senior level between Nigeria and the United States since the change of administration in Washington. It is seen as an initial step towards continued partnership on important global and regional matters.
