Police in Nigeria’s capital, Abuja, have undertaken a large-scale street clean-up operation across the city as part of celebrations marking the 2025 National Police Day.
The initiative, led by the Federal Capital Territory Commissioner of Police, Ajao Adewale, involved officers from various police divisions participating in the clean-up activities on Wednesday.
The street cleaning is part of a three-day community outreach programme organised to commemorate National Police Day.
Speaking at the event, Commissioner Adewale emphasised that the exercise was intended to demonstrate that the police are an integral part of the community they serve.
He also made a connection between cleanliness and crime prevention, stating, “A clean and tidy environment discourages crime, and this is what we have come to reinforce.”
Adewale highlighted the police force’s historical involvement in environmental sanitation drives, noting their role in ensuring public compliance during such exercises.
He added that similar clean-up operations were being coordinated by area commanders in different parts of the capital, including Abaji and Gwagwalada.
“Since this community hosts our command headquarters, we are leading by example,” Adewale stated.
The National Police Day is an annual event in Nigeria aimed at fostering better relations between the police and the public. This year’s activities include community engagement initiatives like the street clean-up, alongside more traditional commemorative events.
