Nigerian Data Protection Chief to Head Anglophone African Committee

The head of Nigeria’s Data Protection Commission, Vincent Olatunji, has been appointed as the Chair of the Anglophone Countries Committee of the Network of Africa Data Protection Authorities (NADPA).

The appointment was confirmed at a committee meeting held on Wednesday, April 2nd, 2025. The Anglophone Countries Committee acts as a platform for collaboration among English-speaking African nations to promote data privacy and protection standards across the continent.

Upon accepting the position, Mr. Olatunji expressed his appreciation for the trust placed in Nigeria to lead the committee at what he described as a critical time for Africa. He emphasised the importance of safeguarding the privacy rights of Africa’s population, which numbers over 1.4 billion people, within the global data processing landscape. Mr. Olatunji called on fellow committee members to view their work as a shared responsibility that must be carried out for the benefit of all data subjects in Africa.

This appointment comes as Nigeria prepares to host the 2025 NADPA Annual General Meeting and Conference, scheduled to take place from May 6th to 8th, 2025. The conference will focus on the theme: “Balancing Innovation in Africa: Data Protection and Privacy in Emerging Technologies.” Organisers say the event aims to highlight Nigeria’s progress under President Bola Tinubu in building a sustainable digital economy.

The Network of Africa Data Protection Authorities (NADPA) is a collaborative body bringing together data protection authorities from across the African continent. This appointment signifies Nigeria’s growing influence and commitment to data protection issues within the region.
