The Nigerian government says it is working closely with Turkish authorities to ensure the safe return of a baby gorilla that was intercepted at Istanbul Airport in Turkey.
The endangered primate was discovered on December 22nd, 2024, during a routine inspection. Turkish officials believe the gorilla was smuggled from Nigeria and was being transported to Bangkok, Thailand.
Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has condemned the trafficking of wildlife, particularly endangered species, as a criminal act that violates both national and international laws. They cited the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), under which baby gorillas are classified as critically endangered, making their trade strictly prohibited except in specific conservation or scientific circumstances.
In a statement released on Saturday, the ministry said that relevant law enforcement agencies, including the Federal Ministry of Environment and the Nigerian Agricultural Quarantine Service, are investigating the origin of the smuggling attempt to identify and prosecute those responsible.
The Nigerian government has also announced plans to increase surveillance at the country’s airports, seaports, and land borders to prevent future incidents of illegal wildlife trafficking.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs commended the Turkish authorities for their vigilance in intercepting the smuggled gorilla and has instructed the Nigerian Embassy in Ankara to liaise with the Turkish government to facilitate the animal’s safe return to Nigeria.
Nigeria has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting biodiversity and endangered wildlife, in line with international environmental agreements. The government has stated its intention to implement proactive measures to ensure that those involved in such illicit activities face the full force of the law.
