Nigeria, Germany Renew Defence Cooperation Agreement

Nigeria and Germany have reaffirmed their commitment to working together on defence matters with the signing of a renewed agreement. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the German Technical Advisory Group (GTAG) was formalised at a ceremony in Abuja.

The agreement, which has been in place for 12 years and is renewed every four years, is designed to strengthen bilateral defence cooperation between the two nations.

Speaking at the signing, the Permanent Secretary of Nigeria’s Ministry of Defence, Ambassador Gabriel Tanimu Aduda, described the MoU as a “strategic counterpart funding arrangement” that highlights the strong defence ties between Nigeria and Germany. He emphasised that the renewed agreement aligns with the shared goals of both countries, promoting long-term security collaboration and development.

Ambassador Aduda stressed the Nigerian government’s commitment to ensuring accountability and efficiency in implementing the agreement. He said that strict timelines and thorough monitoring would be prioritised to ensure the effective delivery of all agreed activities. He also assured that all procurement aspects of the agreement would be carefully evaluated to ensure value for money.

Colonel Boris Bovekemp, Germany’s Defence Attaché to Nigeria, reiterated Germany’s firm commitment to enhancing cooperation in key areas, particularly defence, security, and capacity-building. He praised the long-standing partnership between Nigeria and Germany and highlighted the importance of strengthening existing agreements to tackle evolving security challenges.

The renewed MoU signifies a continuation of the defence partnership between Nigeria and Germany, reinforcing their joint efforts to improve security, develop capabilities, and enhance technical cooperation.
