Defence Minister Backs State of Emergency in Rivers State

Nigeria’s Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, has voiced strong support for President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State.

Mr Matawalle stated the move was “vital for restoring stability” to the state’s political situation, which he described as “turbulent”. He called on all political actors to respect the president’s declaration and work towards a peaceful resolution.

The minister emphasised that the Nigerian military is on high alert to protect government infrastructure and ensure public security, warning that attacks on government facilities would be met with a “resolute response”.

He referenced President Tinubu’s address, highlighting the “unfortunate demolition” of the Rivers State House of Assembly, which he said had left the state without a functioning legislature for over 14 months. He also cited a recent Supreme Court ruling which condemned the demolition as unconstitutional.

Mr Matawalle expressed concern over reports of vandalism and threats from militants, reiterating the federal government’s commitment to ensuring the safety of citizens and protecting infrastructure in Rivers State.

He reaffirmed the Ministry of Defence and the Nigerian Armed Forces’ commitment to national security and the return of peace and democratic governance to Rivers State.

The minister concluded by urging all stakeholders to embrace the state of emergency as an opportunity for “renewed governance and cooperation”.
