The Nigerian government has called on Kenyan authorities to investigate the death of Ladi Olubunmi, a Nigerian content moderator found dead in her Nairobi apartment.
Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), expressed deep concern over the circumstances surrounding Ms. Olubunmi’s death.
Ms. Olubunmi, an employee of social media contracting firm Teleperformance, was discovered deceased in her apartment last week, with reports suggesting her body had been there for three days after she failed to report for work.
Colleagues have alleged that Teleperformance prevented her from travelling back to Nigeria despite her requests, an accusation the company denies, according to an Associated Press report.
NiDCOM, in a statement, emphasised the need for robust labour laws to protect Nigerians working abroad. Ms. Dabiri-Erewa stated that “proper mobility of labour laws in Nigeria would protect the rights and well-being of Nigerians employed abroad, ensuring proper documentation, monitoring, and support systems.”
She highlighted that such laws would address issues faced by Nigerian workers abroad, including poor employment conditions, lack of mental health support, and restrictions on returning home.
“The Chairman, NiDCOM, extends heartfelt condolences to Ms. Olubunmi’s family, friends, and colleagues,” the statement read. “She urges a thorough investigation by Kenyan authorities to determine the circumstances surrounding Olubunmi’s untimely passing.”
NiDCOM is in contact with the Nigerian High Commission in Kenya to monitor the investigation and provide support to the family. Ms. Dabiri-Erewa appealed for calm among Nigerians in Kenya.
She also advised Nigerian jobseekers to engage only with reputable organisations and to understand their rights and available support structures.
This incident follows previous reports of Nigerians dying in suspicious circumstances in Kenya, including the deaths of two Nigerians at a house party in 2021.
