Nigerian President Bola Tinubu Intervenes in Lagos State House of Assembly Leadership Crisis

President Bola Tinubu has intervened in the leadership crisis in the Lagos State House of Assembly, backing Mudashiru Obasa’s return as Speaker. This move comes despite an earlier recommendation for Obasa’s resignation from a panel set up by Tinubu himself.

The resolution was reached after a meeting between Tinubu and all 40 lawmakers at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. A Presidency official revealed that Tinubu brokered peace among the warring factions, asking members to work with Obasa to ensure stability in the Assembly and the state.

However, some Lagos stakeholders have expressed displeasure that the original agreement, which included Obasa’s resignation, was not upheld. The source assured that Tinubu would engage all aggrieved parties to maintain unity.

Obasa had been removed as Speaker on January 13, 2025, by 35 lawmakers who accused him of high-handedness, financial misappropriation, and authoritarian leadership. He was later reinstated as Speaker, but contrary to the agreement, he adjourned the Assembly indefinitely and refused to resign.

Tinubu has also directed Obasa to withdraw his lawsuit challenging his impeachment at the Lagos State High Court. Obasa’s lawyer, Chief Fashanu Afolabi, had earlier stated that the Speaker did not withdraw his suit despite his reinstatement as Speaker.
