Former Nigerian Presidential Spokesman Doyin Okupe Dies at 72

Dr Doyin Okupe, a former spokesman for two Nigerian presidents, has died at the age of 72.

Dr Okupe, who had reportedly been unwell for some time, died in Lagos in the early hours of Friday.

His death was confirmed by the Chairman of Ikenne Local Government, Jamiu Ashimi, and a family friend, Chief Michael Adesanya.

Dr Okupe served as Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to President Olusegun Obasanjo, and Senior Special Assistant on Public Affairs to President Goodluck Jonathan. He was also the former Director-General of Peter Obi’s 2023 presidential campaign.

His political career was marked by controversy. In December 2022, he stepped down from Mr Obi’s campaign after being convicted of money laundering offences. He was found guilty of accepting cash payments above legal limits without using financial institutions.

Following the 2023 elections, he resigned from the Labour Party and became a vocal supporter of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

Dr Okupe was known for his forthright political views and his ability to navigate Nigeria’s political landscape.

A medical doctor by training, he co-founded the Royal Cross Medical Centre and was a former governorship aspirant in Ogun State.
