Nigerian Senator Suspended Over Harassment Claims

The Nigerian Senate has suspended Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan for six months, following allegations of misconduct.

The decision stems from her claims of sexual harassment against Senate President Godswill Akpabio, which he denies.

A Senate committee found Ms Akpoti-Uduaghan guilty of misconduct and failing to cooperate with its investigation. The committee’s report, presented to the Senate on Thursday, cited her refusal to attend their proceedings.

Ms Akpoti-Uduaghan had accused Mr Akpabio of obstructing her legislative work, particularly regarding the Ajaokuta Steel Company, and of making derogatory remarks towards her during a Senate session. Mr Akpabio later apologised for one of the remarks.

The Senate committee recommended that her salary and security details be withdrawn during the suspension. It also advised she issue a formal apology to the Senate.

Senator Abba Moro appealed for leniency, suggesting the suspension be reduced to three months.

The suspension means Ms Akpoti-Uduaghan will be barred from the National Assembly for six months. Mr Akpabio has consistently denied any wrongdoing, stating he respects women.   Sources and related content
