Nigerian regulator orders MultiChoice to freeze DStv and GOtv prices

Nigeria’s Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has directed MultiChoice Nigeria, the operator of DStv and GOtv, to maintain its current subscription prices. This order will remain in effect until the conclusion of an ongoing investigation into the company’s proposed tariff adjustments.

The FCCPC issued the directive in a statement following MultiChoice’s request for an extension to its scheduled appearance before the commission. The regulator had initially summoned MultiChoice’s CEO for an investigative hearing on 27 February regarding concerns over recurring price increases.

While the FCCPC granted the postponement, it has rescheduled the hearing for 6 March 2025, and mandated the company’s CEO and relevant officers to attend with a comprehensive response to the inquiry.

“As part of this directive, MultiChoice is expressly instructed to maintain the existing price structure as of February 27, 2025, pending the commission’s review and final determination on the matter,” the FCCPC statement said.

The FCCPC emphasised that the price freeze is intended to prevent potential consumer exploitation during the investigation.

MultiChoice had announced price increases for its DStv and GOtv packages, citing the need to continue delivering “world-class homegrown and international content.” The proposed increases sparked concerns from subscribers.

The FCCPC said it will provide further updates as the investigation progresses.
