Kogi State to receive $26.2m from World Bank fund for education and healthcare

Kogi State is set to receive $26.2 million from a $500 million World Bank fund aimed at improving basic education and primary healthcare services across Nigeria. The fund is being distributed among the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

The Kogi State Commissioner for Finance, Budget, and Economic Planning, Asiwaju Idris, announced the allocation at a Citizens’ Sensitization Programme in Lokoja. He stated that the World Bank-assisted program, under the HOPE-GOV initiative, will enhance human capital development in the state.

He emphasized the importance of education and healthcare as pillars of a productive society, stating that improved funding in these areas is crucial for progress and inclusive growth.

The State Accountant General and World Bank Fiscal Focal Person, Habibat Tijani, explained that the HOPE-GOV initiative will support the state government’s efforts to improve fiscal transparency, budget credibility, and accountability. It will also increase funding for education and healthcare and improve the recruitment and performance of teachers and healthcare workers.

The Commissioner for Education, Wemi Jones, praised the initiative and Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo’s efforts in improving the education sector. He noted that over ₦1.2 billion has been allocated for external examination fees for primary and secondary school pupils.

The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abdulazeez Adams, said the HOPE-GOV initiative will revolutionize healthcare service delivery and promote access to essential healthcare services in the state.
