The newly sworn-in Governor of Ondo State, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has expressed his sadness that his predecessor, the late Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, did not live to see his inauguration.
During his inaugural speech, Mr. Aiyedatiwa paid tribute to Mr. Akeredolu’s leadership and work in developing the state. “We must not forget this courageous and personable leader who literally emptied himself in the service of Ondo State and Nigeria,” he said, adding that Mr. Akeredolu’s legacy “continues to inspire us.”
Mr. Aiyedatiwa acknowledged the significance of Mr. Akeredolu’s public declaration four years ago, where he was sworn in for a second term, which he said “set the tone” for his own rise to the governorship. He expressed regret that Mr. Akeredolu was not present to witness “the fulfilment of what God spoke through him.” “I am deeply pained that this great leader who saw tomorrow is not here with us to witness and savour this auspicious occasion,” he said.
Mr. Aiyedatiwa described his inauguration as a “pivotal” moment in the state’s history, reflecting on past struggles, the sacrifices of heroes, and the resilience of the people. He also paid tribute to the state’s founding fathers and former governors for their contributions over the past 49 years.
