French President Emmanuel Macron has emphasized that any peace agreement in Ukraine must not compromise the country’s sovereignty, stating that “peace must not mean a surrender of Ukraine.” This assertion was made during a joint news conference with US President Donald Trump at the White House, where the two leaders convened to discuss the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, now in its third year since Russia’s full-scale invasion.
President Trump underscored the need for European nations to share the financial burden of securing peace in Ukraine, rather than relying solely on US support. However, President Macron countered that Europe has indeed fulfilled its responsibilities in assisting Ukraine.
In a related development, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed optimism that the war could be resolved within the year, stating, “we hope that we can finish this war this year, not in three,” during a summit with Western leaders in Kyiv.
Meanwhile, the UN General Assembly has adopted a resolution reaffirming its commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty, independence, unity, and territorial integrity. Notably, the US opposed this resolution and submitted its own alternative.
