El-Rufai Speaks Out on Tinubu’s Government, Criticises Economic Reforms

Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has revealed that President Bola Tinubu rejected his nomination as a minister, contrary to reports that the National Assembly was responsible. In an interview with Arise Television’s Prime Time, El-Rufai disclosed that Tinubu had initially asked him to serve in his government but later changed his mind.

El-Rufai stated that he had made it clear to Tinubu from the outset that he didn’t want anything in return for his support, emphasizing that he’s a self-made man who has made his own money before entering public office. He also expressed his desire to take a break after eight years in office but was persuaded by Tinubu to put his plans on hold and accept a ministerial nomination.

However, El-Rufai claimed that Tinubu later reneged on his offer, leaving him to move on from the disappointment. This revelation comes as El-Rufai has been critical of some of Tinubu’s economic reforms, arguing that the sequencing is wrong and the quality of people implementing the reforms is subpar.

Also during the interview, Mr. El-Rufai argued that Tinubu’s policies are misguided, particularly in addressing food inflation, which he believes is being exacerbated by the government’s actions. Instead of supporting domestic agriculture, the government is allowing subsidized agricultural products from Europe and other countries to flood the market, impoverishing local farmers.
