NITDA partners with Flutterwave and Alami to boost Nigeria’s digital economy

Nigeria’s National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with two tech companies, Flutterwave and Alami, to accelerate the country’s digital transformation. The partnership aims to empower small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) by providing them with the tools and resources needed to thrive in the digital age.

The collaboration follows a meeting between NITDA’s Director General, Kashifu Inuwa, and the CEOs of Flutterwave and Alami. The focus will be on fintech innovation, digital literacy, infrastructure development, and promoting open-source technology. The partners will work to bridge the digital divide and create an environment where businesses can use secure and efficient financial solutions.

Mr. Inuwa emphasized the importance of public-private partnerships in achieving Nigeria’s digital economy goals. He highlighted Flutterwave’s innovative fintech solutions and noted that slow digital adoption among SMEs has hindered economic growth. He added that the collaboration aligns with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

Flutterwave CEO, Olugbenga Agboola, expressed confidence in the partnership’s potential to empower SMEs, stating that many small businesses struggle to embrace digital solutions. He believes that providing seamless and secure payment technologies will help them scale.

The MoU will focus on several key areas, including strengthening public-private partnerships through digital payment infrastructure and technology financing; showcasing payment innovations at Digital Nigeria Week 2025; empowering SMEs and startups; and fostering strategic partnerships. It will also involve collaboration on NITDA’s key initiatives, such as the National Digital Economy Policy and Strategy, digital literacy and skills development, and cybersecurity.

Analysis:

This partnership is a significant step towards boosting Nigeria’s digital economy. By collaborating with leading tech companies like Flutterwave, NITDA is aiming to address the digital divide and empower SMEs. Providing access to digital payment infrastructure and promoting digital literacy are crucial for enabling small businesses to grow and participate in the global economy. This initiative could have a substantial impact on job creation and economic growth in Nigeria. Furthermore, the focus on cybersecurity is vital for ensuring that the digital transformation is secure and sustainable. The involvement of both a large, established fintech player like Flutterwave and a company focused on young entrepreneurs like Alami suggests a comprehensive approach to fostering digital growth at all levels. This collaborative approach between government and the private sector is likely to be more effective than either working in isolation and could serve as a model for other African nations
