Nigeria’s Telecom Operators Implement Tariff Hikes Amid Rising Costs

Airtel Nigeria, the country’s second-largest telecom operator, has introduced a revised data pricing structure, increasing tariffs by up to 50%. The move, which affects various data bundles, is aimed at cushioning the impact of escalating operational costs.

The development comes as the telecom industry grapples with inflation, foreign exchange volatility, and rising network expansion costs. Airtel’s revised price list, published on its website, assures customers of continued affordability, with various data plans available.

Other telecom operators, including MTN, Nigeria’s largest provider, have also adjusted their data and call tariffs in line with the Nigerian Communications Commission’s (NCC) approval. The increases have seen customers paying more for calls, SMS, and internet usage.

Industry experts say the tariff hikes are necessary to support long-term service improvements, but subscribers may face increased financial pressure as communication costs rise. The NCC has approved the tariff adjustments, citing the need for telecom operators to remain viable amidst rising costs.

The development has sparked concerns among consumers, who are already facing economic pressures due to inflation and other factors. The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has threatened to embark on a nationwide strike over the tariff hikes, which it says will further exacerbate the economic hardship faced by Nigerians.
