Lagos State House of Assembly Crisis Deepens Amid DSS Invasion

A severe crisis is unfolding at the Lagos State House of Assembly after operatives from the Department of State Service (DSS) invaded the complex, sparking chaos and condemnation from lawmakers.

The DSS action, which occurred on Monday, was allegedly invited by the Assembly’s clerk, amidst speculation that ousted Speaker Mudashiru Obasa planned to return to the House. However, lawmakers forced their way into the chamber, declaring support for the new Speaker, Mojisola Meranda.

According to eyewitnesses, the DSS operatives sealed the offices of the Speaker, Deputy Speaker, and other principal officers, restricting access to the legislative chamber. The lawmakers, however, broke through the barricades, entering the chamber after a two-hour delay.

During the plenary session, lawmakers condemned the DSS invasion, describing it as an attack on democracy and an attempt to undermine the legislative process. The Speaker, Meranda, presided over the session, which was marked by tension and emotion.

The Governance Advisory Council (GAC) of the All Progressives Congress in Lagos State has reaffirmed plans to meet with President Bola Tinubu over the crisis. The GAC chairman, Chief Tajudeen Olusi, stated that the council would address the issue at the appropriate time.

The crisis has sparked widespread condemnation, with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Labour Party’s Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour criticizing the invasion. Abubakar described the action as “utterly reprehensible” and called for a full investigation, while Rhodes-Vivour demanded an open inquiry to establish those behind the attempted coup.

The Lagos State Police Commissioner, Lanre Ishola, was replaced amid the crisis, with Moshood Jimoh appointed as the new commissioner. The development has raised questions about the role of security agencies in the crisis.

The Speaker, Meranda, has denied rumors of her resignation, stating that she remains committed to her duties. The lawmakers have also passed a vote of confidence in her leadership.

The crisis has highlighted the deepening political tensions in Lagos State, with many calling for calm and restraint. The situation remains fluid, with many uncertain about the outcome of the ongoing power struggle.
