Arsenal closed the gap on Premier League leaders Liverpool to four points with a hard-fought 2-0 victory at struggling Leicester City. Substitute Mikel Merino scored twice in the final 10 minutes to seal the win, after 17-year-old Ethan Nwaneri had hit the woodwork twice in the second half.
Merino’s late double, which came after he replaced the out-of-sorts Raheem Sterling, was a welcome relief for Arsenal, who had struggled to break down Leicester’s stubborn resistance. The win keeps Arsenal’s title pursuit on track, although they have played a game more than Liverpool.
Leicester’s defeat leaves them rooted in the Premier League relegation zone, and the mood of discontent among fans is growing. Protests before and during the game targeted director of football Jon Rudkin, with banners and chants calling for his departure. Manager Ruud van Nistelrooy has a tough task on his hands, with no sign of an upturn in results that might lift the Foxes out of trouble.
