Tinubu Dissolves UniAbuja Governing Council, Appoints New Heads

Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu has dissolved the governing council of Yakubu Gowon University, formerly known as the University of Abuja, and relieved Professor Aisha Maikudi of her duties as Vice-Chancellor with immediate effect.

Professor Patricia Manko has been appointed as the Acting Vice-Chancellor for a six-month term, but she will not be eligible to apply for the substantive Vice-Chancellor position when it becomes available.

In a statement, President Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, announced a major overhaul of the leadership at several federal universities. This includes the appointment of Senator Lanre Tejuoso as the new Pro-Chancellor of Yakubu Gowon University, and Professor Oguejiofu Ujam as the Acting Vice-Chancellor of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.

Other appointments include Olubunmi Ojo as the new Pro-Chancellor of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and Senator Sani Stores as the new Pro-Chancellor of Alvan Ikoku University of Education.

President Tinubu emphasized that these changes reflect his administration’s commitment to revitalizing Nigeria’s higher education system through dynamic leadership and accountability. The restructuring aims to strengthen governance and academic excellence within Nigeria’s tertiary education sector.
