The Wife of Kogi State Governor, Sefinat Ododo, has added her voice to the global campaign to eradicate Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), emphasizing the need for a united front against the practice.
In a statement marking the 2025 International Day of Zero Tolerance for FGM, Mrs. Ododo stressed that protecting girls and women from FGM’s life-threatening consequences is an urgent priority. She described the practice as a blatant human rights violation that has ravaged the lives and futures of millions of women and girls worldwide.
Citing UNICEF statistics, Mrs. Ododo noted that over 200 million girls and women globally have survived FGM, with more than 25 million others at risk of undergoing the practice in the next five years. This alarming reality underscores the need for relentless efforts to eradicate FGM, particularly in Africa.
To combat FGM, the First Lady advocated for increased government intervention and support for survivors in Kogi State. She emphasized the importance of collaborative action across all sectors, reassuring citizens that her office would continue to partner with relevant organizations to strengthen efforts in eliminating FGM and providing necessary support for affected individuals`.
