Senator Ned Nwoko, representing Delta North in the National Assembly, has defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling party, citing a lack of support from Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and Ifeanyi Okowa for the creation of Anioma state.
Nwoko alleged that the governor and Okowa, leaders of the PDP, were against the creation of Anioma state, and that he was not allowed to function effectively as a senator. He claimed that the governor dismissed several projects they had discussed during campaigns, citing a lack of funds.
The senator specifically mentioned the Okpai power plant and Ogwashi-Uku dam as examples of projects that were dismissed. Nwoko stated that he was not allowed to nominate board members, commissioners, or local government chairmen, prompting his decision to join the ruling party.
In response, Delta State Commissioner for Information, Charles Aniagwu, downplayed Nwoko’s defection, saying it was insignificant and that the PDP would win the Delta North senatorial district in 2027.
