US Tariffs: Trump to Impose 25% Tariffs on Mexico and Canada

President Donald Trump is set to announce a 25% tariff on goods from neighbouring Mexico and Canada, according to the White House. The tariffs, expected to be revealed on Saturday, aim to curb undocumented migration, fentanyl trafficking, and trade deficits.

Canada will also face a lower tariff of 10% on its oil exports, effective 18 February. China, meanwhile, will be hit with a 10% tariff on Saturday.

The move has sparked concerns among analysts, who warn that the tariffs could fuel inflation and disrupt trade relations. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is expected to address the issue in a news conference on Saturday.

Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum has vowed to respond calmly to the tariffs, while Trump argues that the import taxes will boost the US economy and assert American power.

The tariffs are set to come into effect on Tuesday, according to Canadian public broadcaster CBC, citing a senior Canadian official
