A medical transport plane crashed into several buildings in north-east Philadelphia on Friday evening, killing all six people on board and at least one other person on the ground. The victims on board were Mexican nationals, including a child patient and her mother, along with four crew members.
Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker confirmed the deaths and said 19 others were injured, although the number could change. Another person who was in a car on the ground at the time of the crash was also killed.
The plane, a Learjet 55, was on a medical transport trip and had been in the air for only a minute before it crashed. Flight logs confirmed the brief flight time, and videos of the incident showed the plane coming down quickly and sparking a huge fireball.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed her condolences, saying, “I mourn the passing of six Mexicans in the aviation accident in Philadelphia, United States.”
The cause of the crash is still unknown, and officials say it may take “days or more” to determine the exact number of casualties and the outcome of those injured.
