Nigeria’s Electoral Commission Under Fire for “Excessive” Budget Demand Amidst Economic Concerns

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is facing criticism for its demand of ₦126 billion for the 2025 budget, a significant increase from the allocated ₦40 billion. The Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room has expressed concern over the request, stating that it is excessive and unjustified, especially considering that there are no major elections scheduled for 2025.

INEC’s chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, defended the request, citing the need for adequate funding to conduct off-cycle elections, continuous voter registration, and replace damaged materials. However, critics argue that the commission should prioritize cleaning up the voter register, which has been plagued by deficiencies, rather than seeking a significant budget increase.

This development comes amidst concerns over Nigeria’s economic situation, with rising inflation, significant naira devaluation, and sluggish GDP growth. The Situation Room is emphasizing the need for prudence in managing public resources and ensuring transparency and accountability in the budget process.

In a joint statement on Friday, the Convener of the Situation Room, Yunusa Ya’u, Co- Conveners, Franklin Oloniju and Mimidoo Achakpa also raised concerns over the National Assembly’s handling of the 2025 budget, citing the introduction of projects with no national significance and the usurpation of local government duties. This, they argue, has consequences for the economy, including inflation and poverty.

The Situation Room is calling for the Federal Government to spend within its means, establish accountability benchmarks for all ministries, departments, and agencies, and ensure transparency and accountability in the budget process. They also demand that INEC publish its proposed 2025 budget for public input and scrutiny.
