A devastating mid-air collision between an American Airlines plane and a US Army Black Hawk helicopter has resulted in both aircraft crashing into the Potomac River in Washington DC. The American Airlines flight, which departed from Wichita, Kansas, was carrying 60 passengers and four crew members, while the helicopter had three soldiers on board.
Tragically, at least 19 bodies have been recovered so far, according to a law enforcement source. The US Figure Skating association has confirmed that several members of the skating community were on board the plane, including two Russian figure skaters and coaches.
The collision occurred near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport around 21:00 local time. US President Donald Trump has been briefed on the “terrible accident” and has questioned why the helicopter didn’t take evasive action.
An investigation into the crash is underway, involving the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), and the US Army. The cause of the collision has not yet been determined.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the aviation industry and the skating community, with many taking to social media to express their condolences and support for the families of the victims.
