A child trafficking ring has been busted by the Rivers State Police Command, leading to the arrest of two female suspects and the rescue of two children in the Chokocho area of Etche Local Government Area. The suspects, Ugochukwu Onyebuchi and Ogechi Nmezi, allegedly defrauded two women, Juliet Blossom and Esther Michael, by pretending to facilitate baby adoptions.
According to the command’s spokesman, Grace Iringe-Koko, the suspects collaborated with a local vigilante group, the Onelga Security Planning and Advisory Committee (OSPAC). The police apprehended the suspects at a checkpoint in Chokocho, where investigations revealed their links to OSPAC members who allegedly aided the crime.
The suspects confessed to their involvement during interrogation, and efforts are ongoing to identify and apprehend other syndicate members, including the implicated OSPAC operatives. The rescued children have been reunited with their families, and investigations continue.
This development comes after a similar incident in December 2024, where the Rivers State Police Command rescued four children from a child trafficking ring. The police have reiterated their commitment to protecting vulnerable individuals and eradicating child trafficking in the state.
