Nigeria Foils Attempt to Smuggle Cannabis to UK

Nigeria’s National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has intercepted a shipment of cannabis, known as “Loud”, concealed in a duvet and bound for the United Kingdom. The agency’s Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, announced that the consignment was seized at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos on Tuesday.

Two suspects, Adakole Sunday and Austin Balogun, linked to the consignment, were arrested following the discovery. According to Babafemi, six parcels of the psychoactive substance, weighing 3.50 kilograms, were hidden inside the duvet.

The main agent, Austin Balogun, claimed he was paid N700,000 to export the consignment to the UK, but spent most of the money on export handling charges and an apartment.

In a separate raid in Ikorodu, Lagos, NDLEA operatives discovered a hideout containing “skuchies” and weapons. Two suspects, Joseph Oluwasegun Adewale and Biodun Adelakun, were arrested, and exhibits seized included locally-made firearms and an iron-head axe.

Further operations in Lagos, Ekiti, Kwara, and Kano states resulted in additional arrests and seizures, including:

  • 47kg skunk and 25.46kg Nitrous Oxide in the Akala area of Mushin, Lagos
  • 1.950kg Canadian Loud in Ekiti State
  • 50,000 pills of tramadol in Kwara State
  • 13.1kg skunk and 125 litres of ‘suck and die’ in Kano State

The NDLEA Chairman, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Marwa (retd.), commended the officers involved and emphasized the agency’s commitment to combating drug trafficking and promoting drug abuse prevention.
