Nigeria’s Airport Authority Chief Vows to Step Down if Reforms Fail

The Managing Director of the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Olubunmi Kuku, has stated that she will resign if her efforts to reform the agency fail. Kuku made this statement during a televised interview, where she also addressed criticisms surrounding her proposal to allocate N580bn for the rehabilitation of obsolete runways across the country.

Mrs. Kuku emphasized that she has made significant progress in restoring sanity to Nigerian airports within her first 100 days in office. She noted that the airports are now cleaner and more welcoming, thanks to her efforts to address the decay and neglect that had plagued the facilities.

Regarding the proposed N580bn allocation, Mrs. Kuku explained that the funds are necessary to reconstruct runways that have exceeded their lifespan. She stated that the average lifespan of a runway is 20-25 years, but many of Nigeria’s runways have been in use for 30-35 years. She appealed to critics to research the costs associated with building and maintaining aviation infrastructure.
