The Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP) is set to commission two new water schemes in Ogoni, Rivers State, by February 2025. According to Professor Nenibarini Zabbey, Project Coordinator of HYPREP, the water schemes, located in Beeri and Bunu in Khana and Tai Local Government Areas, respectively, will provide potable water to impacted communities in Ogoni.
Professor Zabbey made this announcement during an inspection visit to the water facilities and remediation sites in K-Dere, Gokana Local Government Area. He expressed satisfaction with the pace of work and the determination of community workers, noting that the visit was to appraise the level of work and encourage community workers. The project coordinator also emphasized the importance of community-centric approach and gender inclusion, requesting women representation in future meetings.
The two new water schemes are part of HYPREP’s Phase II water project, which aims to provide potable water to 68 communities. Additionally, HYPREP is carrying out 34 shoreline remediation works in Gokana LGA, with the shoreline cleanup currently at 25% completion. The project coordinator’s visit demonstrates his commitment to ensuring timely and sustainable project delivery.
