The European Union has announced an initial humanitarian assistance budget of €1.9 billion for 2025, with €510 million allocated to Nigeria and other sub-Saharan African countries. The funds will be channelled across West and Central Africa, the Sahel, the Lake Chad basin, North-West Nigeria, Central Africa, the Great Lakes region, and the Greater Horn of Africa.
The EU’s humanitarian aid will also support other regions, including:
- Middle East and North Africa: €470 million, with a focus on delivering aid to Gaza and Yemen
- Ukraine: €140 million, with an additional €8 million for humanitarian projects in neighbouring Moldova
- Latin America and the Caribbean: €113 million, addressing the crisis in Venezuela, armed conflicts in Colombia, and violence in Central America, Mexico, and Ecuador
- Asia and the Pacific: €182 million, focusing on the Myanmar crisis, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan
The EU Commissioner for Equality, Preparedness and Crisis Management, Hadja Lahbib, emphasized the importance of safe and unimpeded access to people in need, stressing that funding alone is not enough.
