Nigeria’s Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has revealed that his ministry completed multiple multi-billion-naira capital projects in 2024 without receiving any capital allocation in the budget.
Speaking at the 2025 budget defence session, Tunji-Ojo explained that this feat was achieved by reviewing contracts dating back to 1999 and ensuring contractors fulfilled their obligations. Some of these contracts had been abandoned due to breaches or under public-private partnerships.
The minister highlighted several completed projects, including automation e-gates, command and control centres, resource centres, visa approval centres, and solar farms. Tunji-Ojo emphasized that no new contracts were signed, and no public funds were used for these projects. Instead, existing contracts were reviewed, and value proposition management was implemented to ensure contractors delivered on their obligations.
Tunji-Ojo attributed his success to his IT expertise, which enabled him to design and deliver solutions that ensured the government received value from previously signed agreements. He assured the committee that in 2025, the ministry would intensify its efforts to hold contractors accountable for delivering value to the government.
