Nigeria Launches Digital Literacy Programme for Civil Servants

The Federal Government has unveiled a digital literacy training programme aimed at enhancing the skills of federal civil servants in navigating digital tools and technologies. This initiative, a collaborative effort between the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) and the Office of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation, seeks to improve productivity and efficiency in the public sector.

According to Kashifu Inuwa, Director General of NITDA, digital transformation is not just about technology, but about people. “Technology alone will not drive meaningful change without the active involvement and engagement of individuals,” he emphasized.

The programme is part of NITDA’s ambitious goal to achieve 70% digital literacy by 2027. To this end, NITDA has launched an initiative called Digital Literacy for All (DL4ALL), which aims to empower Nigerians with essential digital skills.

Key Components of the Programme:

  • Digital Literacy Skills Curriculum: Development of a digital literacy skills curriculum in collaboration with the Ministry of Education.
  • Training for Teachers: Training of all teachers to equip them with digital literacy skills.
  • Workforce Readiness: Preparation of the workforce for digital competency, with the World Bank predicting that 35-45% of jobs in Nigeria will require digital skills by 2030.
  • NYSC Collaboration: Partnership with the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to recruit 80 champions in each NYSC stream, aiming to train at least 10.3 million Nigerians on digital literacy annually.

The programme has been hailed as a pivotal opportunity to shape the future of Nigeria’s public service, with the potential to drive meaningful change and progress in the country.
