Lagos State House of Assembly Makes History with First Female Speaker

In a groundbreaking move, Mojisola Meranda has been sworn in as the first female Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly. This development comes after the impeachment of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa on Monday during a plenary session.

Meranda, who represents the Apapa 1 state constituency, took her oath of office, affirming her commitment to faithfully discharge her duties in accordance with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The impeachment of Obasa was reportedly due to multiple allegations of fraud. The Clerk of the House, Olalekan Onafeko, was also suspended indefinitely, while the Chief Whip, Mojeed Fatai, was elected the new Deputy Speaker.

Mrs. Meranda’s historic appointment marks a significant milestone for women in politics in Nigeria. With her wealth of experience in public service, she is poised to bring about positive change in the state.
