The wife of Arsenal striker Kai Havertz has shared disturbing screenshots of abuse she received on social media following Sunday’s FA Cup loss to Manchester United. Sophia Havertz posted two direct messages on her Instagram story, which included threats to the couple’s unborn child.
The abuse came after Havertz missed a crucial chance to win the game in normal time and had his penalty saved in the shootout, which United won 5-3. Arsenal have reported the abuse to the police and are working with a specialist data firm to identify the perpetrators.
Sophia Havertz expressed her shock and disappointment at the abuse, writing: “For anyone to think it’s okay to write something like this is so shocking to me. I hope you are so ashamed of yourself.” She also appealed to fans to be more respectful, saying: “We are better than this.”
