Ivory Coast’s President Ouattara Hints at Seeking Fourth Term

Ivory Coast President Alassane Ouattara has hinted at seeking re-election in the 2025 presidential election, despite earlier suggestions that he would step down. Speaking to diplomats in Abidjan on Thursday, Ouattara, 83, emphasized his good health and eagerness to continue serving his country.

This marks a significant shift in Ouattara’s stance, as he had previously expressed a desire to retire. However, he hinted that his decision to run again might depend on whether his longtime political rivals also withdraw from politics.

Ouattara’s party has already voiced support for his potential candidacy in September, but a formal announcement is yet to be made. The Ivory Coast presidential election is scheduled for October, with several candidates already declaring their intentions to run, including former President Laurent Gbagbo and former Prime Minister Pascal Affi N’Guessan.

Ouattara’s potential bid for a fourth term has added a new layer of complexity to the electoral landscape in Ivory Coast, where his candidacy could significantly impact the outcome of the election.
