Deadly Attack on Chad’s Presidential Palace Leaves 19 Dead

A violent confrontation in Chad’s capital, N’Djamena, has resulted in the deaths of at least 19 people, including 18 attackers and one security officer. The attack on the presidential complex occurred on Wednesday evening, with security forces intervening to stop the armed fighters ยน.

According to Chad’s Foreign Minister Abderaman Koulamallah, the situation is now under control, with soldiers protecting the president. Koulamallah stated that 18 attackers were killed, six others were injured, and one security officer lost his life, with three others injured.

The attack coincided with a visit from China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi, who had met with Chad’s President Mahamat Idriss Deby just hours before the violence erupted. Koulamallah confirmed that Deby was in the presidential complex during the attack.

The incident has raised concerns about the security situation in Chad, which has experienced frequent coups in the past. Local residents reported hearing multiple gunshots near the presidential compound, and footage showed military vehicles and heavily armed troops patrolling the streets.

The attack occurred just a week after parliamentary elections aimed at restoring democracy, which were boycotted by the main opposition. The election results are still pending, and analysts believe the outcome may strengthen President Mahamat Deby Itno’s hold on power.
