South African actress and singer Winnie Khumalo has died at the age of 51 after a short illness, her family has announced. The Afropop singer, known for her powerful voice and versatile performances, passed away on Tuesday while being rushed to hospital.
Khumalo’s music career spanned several decades, with hits like “Live My Life” and collaborations with prominent South African artists, including the late Brenda Fassie. She also appeared in popular South African TV series and released numerous solo albums.
Tributes have poured in on social media, with fans and fellow celebrities expressing shock and sadness at her passing. Kalawa Jazmee Records, Khumalo’s record label, described her as a “true icon” who inspired many with her talent and dedication.
Khumalo is survived by her daughter, Rethabile Khumalo, and son, Thabo Khumalo. The cause of her death has not been disclosed.
