The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has announced the appointment of Éric Chelle as the new head coach of the Super Eagles. Chelle, who previously managed Mali’s national team, becomes the third person to take charge of the Super Eagles since José Peseiro’s resignation in March 2024.
The NFF confirmed Chelle’s appointment on Tuesday, following a recommendation by its Technical and Development Sub-Committee. Chelle’s first task will be to lead the home-based Super Eagles at the 2024 African Nations Championship in Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda.
NFF president Ibrahim Gusau stated that Chelle’s immediate start is crucial, as the new coach will also be responsible for managing the senior national team. Gusau emphasized the importance of having the same coach manage both the CHAN Eagles and the senior national team.
Chelle, a former Mali international, has coaching experience with clubs such as GS Consolat, FC Martigues, and MC Oran. He led Mali to the quarter-finals of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, where they narrowly lost to Ivory Coast.
Chelle faces a significant challenge in guiding the Super Eagles to qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with the team currently sitting in fifth place in their qualifying group.
