UK Weather: Airports Closed and Travel Disrupted as Snow and Freezing Rain Hit

Several major airports in England have been forced to shut their runways due to snow and freezing rain, causing cancellations and delays for passengers. An amber weather warning remains in place for parts of the UK, including the Midlands and northern England, until midnight on Sunday.

Manchester Airport was closed until mid-morning on Sunday, with all incoming flights diverted elsewhere. Five other airports also temporarily closed their runways due to the wintry conditions.

The weather has also caused road closures, rail disruption, and cancellations, with parts of southern England warned of flooding. The Environment Agency has issued over 100 flood alerts, with flooding expected in some areas.

The Met Office has warned that some rural communities could be cut off, with up to 40cm of snow expected in some areas. Fresh yellow weather warnings will come into force on Sunday and Monday.

Temperatures plummeted overnight, with Loch Glascarnoch in Scotland recording a low of -11C. Heavy snow has affected much of England and northern Wales, with Bingley in West Yorkshire recording 16cm of snow as of 09:00 on Sunday.
