At least 11 Palestinians, including the chief of Gaza’s Hamas-run police force, Mahmoud Salah, and his assistant, Hussam Shahwan, have been killed in an Israeli airstrike on a tent camp in southern Gaza. The camp, located in al-Mawasi, west of Khan Younis, was sheltering displaced families. Three children and two women were also among the dead.
The Hamas-run interior ministry has condemned the attack, calling it an “assassination” of Salah and Shahwan, who were “performing their humanitarian and national duty”. The Israeli military has stated that it is investigating the reports.
The airstrike has raised concerns about the safety of civilians in Gaza, particularly in the declared “humanitarian zone” of al-Mawasi. Despite its designation as a safe area, the zone has been repeatedly attacked by Israeli forces, who claim that Hamas operatives are hiding among displaced civilians.
The situation in Gaza has been exacerbated by recent cold and wet weather, which has worsened conditions in makeshift camps. In addition to the airstrike in al-Mawasi, there have been deadly Israeli airstrikes in other parts of Gaza, including a suburb of Gaza City, Jabalia, and Bureij in central Gaza
