Nigeria Reaffirms Commitment to Peace and Stability in West Africa

The Federal Republic of Nigeria has reiterated its unwavering commitment to peace, stability, and regional harmony in West Africa. This comes amidst concerns over recent statements made by Niger’s President, Abdourahman Tchiani. Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, emphasized the country’s desire for dialogue as the cornerstone of sustainable solutions. He assured that Nigeria will not engage in any actions that could undermine Niger’s sovereignty and security. The minister in a statement highlighted the deep historical and cultural ties between Nigeria and Niger, which are underscored by trade and economic interdependence. He noted that unfounded allegations can cause needless tensions, disaffection, and threaten the collective progress of the region. To address these concerns, Nigeria has proposed the following:- Reaffirming Sovereignty and Territorial Integrity: Nigeria respects Niger’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, in line with ECOWAS principles.

Open Dialogue: Nigeria welcomes and encourages open, constructive dialogue between the two governments to address mutual concerns.-

Confidence-Building Measures: Nigeria is prepared to explore confidence-building measures to alleviate the humanitarian impact on border communities.

Regional and International Support: Nigeria calls upon regional and international partners to support efforts aimed at fostering reconciliation and stability. Nigeria remains guided by the principles of diplomacy, mutual respect, and the pursuit of peace, and is confident that through constructive engagement, the two countries can work towards a more prosperous and stable future for their people.
