A devastating plane crash in South Korea has prompted an outpouring of sympathy from around the world, including Nigeria. The Federal Government of Nigeria has expressed its condolences to the government and people of South Korea following the tragic crash of Jeju Air Flight 2216, which claimed the lives of 179 people. The crash occurred on Sunday, December 29, 2024, when the Boeing 737-800, returning from Bangkok, Thailand, attempted to land at Muan International Airport in southern South Korea. The plane skidded off the runway, collided with a wall and burst into flames, leaving only two survivors among the 181 passengers and crew on board.
In a statement by the Foreign Ministry’s Acting Spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, the Nigerian government described the crash as a “tragic loss” and reaffirmed Nigeria’s support for the South Korean people. The government also conveyed its condolences to the bereaved families and expressed solidarity with South Korea during this difficult time.
The crash has sparked an investigation, with authorities working to determine the cause of the disaster. The incident has also prompted South Korea to inspect its B737-800 fleet.
