Police Dismiss Allegations of Targeting Catholic Church’s Humanitarian Efforts

Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory Police Command has dismissed allegations made by the Catholic Archbishop of Abuja Diocese, Most Rev. Ignatius Kaigama, claiming the police are trying to discredit the church’s humanitarian efforts.

The police described the allegations as baseless and disappointing, clarifying that they did not arrest the priest in charge of the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Abuja, as claimed. Instead, the police invited key individuals involved in organizing the distribution of palliatives for questioning, following a tragic stampede at the church that resulted in 10 deaths and eight injuries.

The police emphasized that their actions are motivated by a need to uncover the truth and ensure accountability, not to demonize the church’s humanitarian efforts. The investigation is ongoing, and those previously questioned may be invited again if necessary.
